10 Haunted Places in India to Avoid If You’re a "Fattu"

The mysteries of the unknown have always fascinated the human mind. It’s not surprising for experts to say that India is a beautiful yet deliciously mysterious country that beholds the secrets and stories of a lot of palaces and their kings, of treasures and their keys, of those who died a painful death and are now a part of the broken synchronize that is reality. Which is why a lot of forts or palaces or beaches or even a ‘just another’ valley in India has a history or a twist of mystery attached to it or something which makes a more interesting case.

Are you fond of the unknown? Do you remember the Zee Horror Show or the Aahat?
If you are one of those who love to turn the pages long sealed and kept hidden from the human eye, if the word ‘supernatural‘ gives you an Adrenalin rush, you, my friend, like me and many others, are someone who likes to push the boundaries a little and take a peek into what’s happening in the strange, mysterious world out there. This post is for all the travelers who are done with the monotony of life and are looking forward to exploring the unexplored.

Fattus are people who get scared easily. And, if you're one (c'mon admit it!) then we advise you should never venture out to explore these places.

Some tales can be stranger than fiction, which is why I say – At your own risk!

1. Bhangarh Fort – Ajabgarh, Alwar, Rajasthan

Scary story: Located in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, this fort is notorious for shocking paranormal activities. There is a legend that explains why the place is haunted. Apparently there was a tantrik named Singhiya who was in love with Princess Ratnavati. He used his black magic on the princess, but it backfired on him and he died. But just before he did, he cursed the fort, saying that all who dwelt in the fort shall die. Till date people are warned not to visit the fort after sunset.

2. Dumas Beach, Gujarat

Famous scenic Dumas Beach of Gujarat has many stories to tell about spirits. If one goes by the story, Hindus burn their dead bodies on the beach, and this area has been reported numerous of times for its paranormal activities. People have reported experiences like hearing strange whispers on Dumas beach. It`s like the wind around this area is full of spirits of dead people. Some tourists have been even known to have disappeared while taking walks on the beach at night.

Scary story:  Beaches are the best spots to relax. But not this one. Dumas beach is a cremation ground for the Hindus, therefore it is said that the tormented souls and the ones who did not seek ‘moksha’ loiter on the beach post sunset.

3. Dow Hills, West Bengal

A number of murders have taken place in the Dow Hill forest that has left an eerie feeling in the atmosphere. Many locals have also heard footsteps in the corridors of Victoria Boys School during the December-March vacations. Woodcutters claim to have seen a headless young boy walking and then disappearing into the trees. All these things make this place one of the most haunted places in India.

Scary story: People never loiter in the dense area of Dow Hills because of its horrid past. The hills have witnessed many deaths and therefore remain secluded.

4. Brij Raj Bhavan Palace in Kota, Rajasthan

The Brij Raj Bhavan Palace in Kota should definitely be on your list being one of the most ‘ghostly’ places in India. This old palace converted into a heritage hotel is apparently haunted by a British ghost who was killed during the Revolt of 1857. There are some who also add that Major Burton (the ghost) along with his sons was shot right inside the palace and therefore, he haunts the place. In fact, in this palace, considered by many as one of the most mysterious and hanuted places in India, the ghost of the Major doesn’t really harm anyone, but the night guards claim to have been slapped by an invisible hand in the middle of the night.
The perfect place to visit if you want to explore the unknown and stay out in the clean.

The 178-year-old Brij Raj Bhavan Palace of the former princely family of Kota in Rajasthan has a resident ghost, namely that of Major Burton, who, while serving as the British resident to Kota, was killed by Indian sepoys during the 1857 Mutiny. The sepoys killed Major Burton and his two sons in the central hall of the building. According to the tale, an elderly man with a cane in his hand, the ghost of Major Burton does not harm anybody. But during his night visit, if any of the guards are sleeping or dozing, Major Burton gives them a slap.

5. D`Souza Chawl of Mahim, Mumbai

A well in the D`souza Chawl area of Mumbai, Mahim has acquired the reputation of being haunted. It is said that a woman, while getting water, fell to her death in the well. Many people claim to have seen the ghostly apparition of that woman near the well during nights. She is also said to be harmless.

Scary story:  A lady who fell in the well while drawing water, apparently haunts the chawl even today.

6. Thane – Vrindavan Society

It is said that a man had committed suicide in one of the buildings in Vrindavan Society (Bldg. No.66 B).The security guards patrolling the area have come across weird happenings. Once a guard was slapped so hard that he got up from his chair and hit the other guard who was nearby him thinking he was the one who hit him.

Scary story: It's hard to believe that ghost stories exist even amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. One such case here is that of Vrindavan society, which is said to be the largest residential complex of Thane. 66 B is the building from the complex that has an eerie past. A man had committed suicide here and since then there have been reports of paranormal activities.

Scary story: Punekars have many scary Shaniwarwada stories to share. It is said that strange apparitions and paranormal activities are witnessed during the full moon. And, that the wada should not be visited during the night.

Even the capital of India, Delhi is haunted! The most eerie place in Delhi is Delhi Cantt area which is full of green and lush trees. Most of the times, people have seen a lady clad in white sari asking for lift. If you don’t stop your vehicle, she will start running swiftly with the same speed and believe it or not, people have reported her reaching ahead of them. This story has been doing the rounds for a while now. Some people claim that possibly the lady was a hitchhiker while alive; hence she waves at lonely passersby to stop.

Scary story: Everybody in the area will tell you the terrifying story of a lady in white who seeks a lift from people. If you don’t stop you vehicle then she jumps on the boot. Now that’s friggin scary!

10. GP block - Meerut

Although not well known, GP block of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh has been reported as a haunted place. On a number of occasions, four guys have been seen sitting inside a house with a single candle lighted and drinking beer. It happens to be the most common sight for people passing through that area. Some of them also said that they have even seen girls in red dress coming out of the house. The house is double-storeyed and people have seen the boys sitting on the roof-top. People have stopped going to that place now.
